While the critics were initially lukewarm to this ‘saccharine’ musical, the world has since fallen in love with the von Trapp family story. A true-life story based on the memoirs of Maria von Trapp, opens on the eve of the Second World War in Austria. Austria is under the influence of Nazi Germany and the country is quickly becoming militarized. The filmed version of The Sound of Music helped cement Julie Andrews’ status as a star. Canada’s own Christopher Plummer played the strict Captain von Trapp, whose love of music had died with the death of his first wife. Plummer’s Captain von Trapp forbids his seven children from practicing music. Into this unhappy family comes a breath of fresh air. A high-spirited young nun by the name of Maria is sent by the mother superior to further her religious education by acting as governess to the rebellious von Trapp children. They had previously sent many governesses packing. Maria brings music back into their lives.
At the end of the musical, the von Trapp family escapes from Austria through the Alps and bring their music to the world.
Written by Charles Robertson with music and lyrics by Michael K. Myers, the play is “funny and heartwarming” according to director Anne Marie Mortensen.
