Peterson earned her spot within Toronto’s independent music scene when she was invited to host and perform her original songs in the monthly female singer-songwriter night called Girls Girls Girls at the renowned Cameron House (September 2010 to December 2012), and in March 2012 when she initially showcased at Canadian Music Week. She was invited back to perform two showcases at CMW 2013 and in that same year she launched her first full-length album ‘Unbreakable’ in Toronto. Melanie followed that up with a
triumphant NXNE showcase in June and a successful Southern Ontario tour.

MEDIA QUOTES:

“Melanie Peterson’s final performance at Sauce on the Danforth in Toronto for 2015 went out ‘like a Lion’. It was a free gig but it certainly came under the heading of ‘Bang for your Buck’. This is an artist who knows how to entertain an audience, playing three 45 minute sets to a packed house of admiring fans.” ~ Frank Mcfadden, Snapd Beach/Danforth

“A melodically enchanting songwriter and musically adept guitarist, she has the crowd eating out of her hand. I’d call her music smooth pop as it is as inviting as it is sweet.” ~ Gary 17, Toronto Moon Magazine

“I’ve been a fan of Melanie Peterson’s songwriting since first hearing her just over three years ago and subsequently listening to her wonderful After The Fall cd. My favourite tune from that album is “Unbreakable”, which I regard as her signature tune and first ‘hit’.” ~ Gary 17, Toronto Moon Magazine, April, 2013

“If you are looking for super live music, check out Melanie Peterson, a terrific singer and songwriter. She sounds just as good live as she does on her album.  She has a beautiful voice and her songwriting is tops too.” ~ Joe Warmington, Toronto Sun, May 2011

“…we have very much enjoyed playing a variety of tracks from ‘Unbreakable’, Melanie’s first full length CD release and my Saturday morning listeners have been quick to let us know they enjoy what Melanie does!” ~ Monica Winfield, host, BBC Radio Leicester, 2013

“Unbreakable is a definite feel good album, and Melanie’s soft but not overly tender vocals lays out each song within the distinct genre form as the songs on Unbreakable range from Jazz, Pop, Folk and even a bit of Pop/Rock.” ~ Matt Hartwick, Kingston Music Reviews, 2013

“I can hear the Joni Mitchell influence in her voice, but there is a significant difference between the two—Joni’s voice is cool, introverted and detached, whereas Melanie’s is warmth personified. She has the ability to imbue her vocals with palpable emotion without going over the top.” ~ Altrockchick.com

ABOUT:

Blessed with a voice reminiscent of an early Joni Mitchell, and an ability to imbue her vocals with palpable and authentic emotion, Saskatoon born, Toronto based singer-songwriter and actress Melanie Peterson – standing on the edge of her second full-length release ‘Anywhere From Here’ – has nimbly become one of the brightest lights on the Toronto music scene. Previously, she has released a five song EP called ‘After the Fall’ (2010), her first full-length album ‘Unbreakable’ (2013) and a six-song cover EP titled ‘Read It On The Radio’ (2014).

Isn’t It Time You Discovered UK Singer-Songwriter Emily Maguire?

UK Singer-songwriter Emily MaguireAcclaimed singer-songwriter Emily Maguire is performing at Artrix Arts Centre on Saturday 28th September 2013.

Best-known for her strong, thought-provoking lyrics and ‘supremely expressive vocals’ (Rock’n’Reel Magazine), Emily’s songs have been played regularly on Radio 2 and have won her fans across the globe.

Classically trained on cello, piano and flute, Emily taught herself the guitar and started writing songs when she found herself stuck at home with a chronic illness.  A few years later, back on her feet and fed up with grey skies and concrete, she decided to give up her flat in London for a shack made from recycled wood, tin and potato sacks on a farm out in the Australian bush.  There she set up her own record label Shaktu Records with partner Christian Dunham, and for four years lived an eco-friendly, self-sufficient lifestyle, financing her music by making and selling goats cheese on the farm.

Following the release of her critically acclaimed albums ‘Stranger Place’ and ‘Keep Walking’, Emily returned to the UK touring extensively with some of the world’s great singer-songwriters including Don McLean, Eric Bibb, Paul Brady and Roddy Frame.  The title track of ‘Keep Walking’ was playlisted on Radio 2 in the UK and on ABC Radio across Australia.  Emily’s third album ‘Believer’, a ‘masterpiece’ according to Maverick Magazine, won rave reviews in the music press with 2 songs playlisted on Radio 2.

After 7 months on the road in 2011 with the former lead singer of Dr Hook, Dennis Locorriere, Emily took time out from touring in 2012 to write and record her fourth studio album ‘Bird Inside A Cage’.  The album was produced by Nigel Butler (k.d. lang, Will Young, Robbie Williams) known to TV lovers as one of the producers on X Factor.  With its release funded entirely by Emily’s fans, ‘Bird Inside A Cage’ is a bold departure from her previous recordings while still retaining all the underlying trademarks of her emotive, lyric-rich songs.  The album was released in July 2013.

Emily will be performing at Artrix Arts Centre, Slideslow Drive, Bromsgrove on Saturday 28th September 2013.  Tickets are £10, available from the Box Office on 01527 577330 or online at http://www.artrix.co.uk.

Live Wire Music Series Presents Eliza Gilkyson + Special Guest Ariana Gillis on Fri. Sept. 21st

Hello music lovers & Live Wire friends,

Hopefully you already have your seats for the first Live Wire show of the new season. If not, get to Brian’s Record Option or Tara Foods soon as Eliza has built a large and enthusiastic following in Kingston.

I’m very happy to have become an official volunteer of the Live Wire Music Series, in charge of social media marketing.  This season’s line-up is stellar so you won’t want to miss a single show!

Cheers,
Christine

Live Wire Music Series begins the new season with one of our favourites – the magnificent, poetically gifted singer Eliza Gilkyson, from Austin, Texas. This is Eliza’s fourth visit to Kingston in the last decade and she always puts on a dynamic, politically charged concert that demonstrates why she is one of the most respected roots musicians in North America. She has appeared on Austin City Limits and Mountain Stage, been inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame and received a Grammy nomination for her superb 2006 release Paradise Hotel. Her latest CD Roses at the End of Time “continues to express her vivid vision of the world, full of both beauty and anger, inspiration and struggle, and wrapped in melodies so hauntingly beautiful that they seem to float.”

Opening the concert will be Ariana Gillis from Vineland, Ontario, one of the most powerful new voices in Canadian music today. Chosen as Young Performer of the Year at the 2009 Canadian Folk Music Awards, she is fulfilling the promise many people have seen since she put out her first EP when she was 17.

Live Wire Music Series presents:

Eliza Gilkyson with special guest Ariana Gillis

Friday, Sept. 21st ~ 7:30 pm
Octave Theatre, 711 Dalton Ave., Kingston

Eliza Gilkyson Quotes:

Few folk singers, even those from the original folk revival, have been able to combine social consciousness with musicality as well as Eliza Gilkyson. She merges strong songwriting talent with commanding vocals to create music that has immediate appeal as well as lasting intellectual impact. – Vintage Guitar

Like the master writer she is, Gilkyson cuts through the jungle of posturing leftist verbiage and conservative spin…She packs a political punch that is as entertaining and blue-collar as the work of Woody Guthrie” – Houston Press

Intimate, delicate-voiced and given to musical introspection . . . her honest voice and understated, life affirming lyrics remain the core of her songs. – People Magazine

Gilkyson doesn’t pull any punches. She graces the music with her lush and passionate voice; a dark and lonely sound, hope and satisfaction, and edgy lyrics with piercing imagery round out the whole. – New York Times

Raw, harrowing tales of shattered lives and immoral wars. She continues to make big statements… – Penguin Eggs

Her work is too good to be ignored. She sings with plaintive power and writes with soulful strength. – Dallas Morning News

MORE RAVE REVIEWS FOR KIRSTEN JONES:

“Smooth-as-buckwheat-honey vocals…a bona fide comparison to Emmylou Harris is not out of order…” – Eric Thom, Exclaim Magazine

Toronto-based singer/songwriter Kirsten Jones had only one producer in mind for her sophomore album, The Mad Mile: former Jayhawks front man Gary Louris. “I knew I wanted to try getting in touch with Gary before even trying to think of anyone else, so I looked up his management online and just sent them a package.” A few months later, Louris’ management e-mailed Jones, saying Gary was interested in the project. By summer, Jones and Louris were writing in her Toronto living room, where they also finished all the preproduction for the recording in three days. They hit the studio later that fall. Creating a sound that combined her alt country and folk influences with her own unique writing style came naturally, thanks to Louris’ firsthand experience with some of Jones’ favourite artists (The Dixie Chicks, Kelly Willis, Lucinda Williams, The Jayhawks).

“She has interesting lyrics, pretty heavy duty lyrics and a hook sensibility. She has it, you know? I’m jealous – I wish I had written these songs… – Gary Louris

In what proved to be a banner year, Kirsten also received a coveted FACTOR award for over $20,000 toward the making of the new CD. The Mad Mile was released on May 11, 2010, and is distributed through Fontana North/Universal. Guests include pedal steel player Greg Leisz (Emmylou Harris, Tracy Chapman, Sheryl Crow, Alison Krauss), Oh Susanna, and Blue Rodeo’s Jim Cuddy and Bob Egan.

“The end result of their fruitful partnership (Louris/Jones) is ‘The Mad Mile,’ an alt country/roots record which could very well do for Jones what ‘Failer’ did for Kathleen Edwards”.  – Jason MacNeil, spinner.com

Throughout the last two years, several aspects of Jones’ career have fallen into place. She was chosen by Billboard Canada as one of five artists to watch in 2010, and The Mad Mile was nominated for a 2010 Juno Award, thanks to an early iTunes release. Jones has been a finalist two years in a row in the International Songwriting Competition in the Americana category (out of over 15,000 entries), a Top 3 finalist in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest in the country category (alongside Canadian success story Gordie Sampson), was a finalist in the Kerrville New Folk Contest, and has received honourable mention in both the Billboard and Nashville Songwriter’s Association songwriting competitions. The Canadian Country Music Awards invited Kirsten to perform two years in a row at the prestigious Songwriter’s Cafe, alongside such celebrated songwriters as Victoria Banks, Lisa Brokop, Jamie Warren, and Jessie Farrell. Kirsten wrote or co-wrote every song on The Mad Mile, and two songs were co-written with producer Gary Louris.

“The music of Kirsten Jones combines the best elements of alt-country and contemporary folk. She’s also an engaging live performer, bringing both introspection and high humour to her shows”. – Mark Rheaume, CBC Radio

“The talented singer-songwriter is now busy winning the hearts of fans and breaking genres with her unique style of alt-country that she sings with heartfelt sincerity and catchy hooks”. – Blue Rodeo
