Peterson earned her spot within Toronto’s independent music scene when she was invited to host and perform her original songs in the monthly female singer-songwriter night called Girls Girls Girls at the renowned Cameron House (September 2010 to December 2012), and in March 2012 when she initially showcased at Canadian Music Week. She was invited back to perform two showcases at CMW 2013 and in that same year she launched her first full-length album ‘Unbreakable’ in Toronto. Melanie followed that up with a
triumphant NXNE showcase in June and a successful Southern Ontario tour.

MEDIA QUOTES:

“Melanie Peterson’s final performance at Sauce on the Danforth in Toronto for 2015 went out ‘like a Lion’. It was a free gig but it certainly came under the heading of ‘Bang for your Buck’. This is an artist who knows how to entertain an audience, playing three 45 minute sets to a packed house of admiring fans.” ~ Frank Mcfadden, Snapd Beach/Danforth

“A melodically enchanting songwriter and musically adept guitarist, she has the crowd eating out of her hand. I’d call her music smooth pop as it is as inviting as it is sweet.” ~ Gary 17, Toronto Moon Magazine

“I’ve been a fan of Melanie Peterson’s songwriting since first hearing her just over three years ago and subsequently listening to her wonderful After The Fall cd. My favourite tune from that album is “Unbreakable”, which I regard as her signature tune and first ‘hit’.” ~ Gary 17, Toronto Moon Magazine, April, 2013

“If you are looking for super live music, check out Melanie Peterson, a terrific singer and songwriter. She sounds just as good live as she does on her album.  She has a beautiful voice and her songwriting is tops too.” ~ Joe Warmington, Toronto Sun, May 2011

“…we have very much enjoyed playing a variety of tracks from ‘Unbreakable’, Melanie’s first full length CD release and my Saturday morning listeners have been quick to let us know they enjoy what Melanie does!” ~ Monica Winfield, host, BBC Radio Leicester, 2013

“Unbreakable is a definite feel good album, and Melanie’s soft but not overly tender vocals lays out each song within the distinct genre form as the songs on Unbreakable range from Jazz, Pop, Folk and even a bit of Pop/Rock.” ~ Matt Hartwick, Kingston Music Reviews, 2013

“I can hear the Joni Mitchell influence in her voice, but there is a significant difference between the two—Joni’s voice is cool, introverted and detached, whereas Melanie’s is warmth personified. She has the ability to imbue her vocals with palpable emotion without going over the top.” ~ Altrockchick.com

Isn’t It Time You Discovered UK Singer-Songwriter Emily Maguire?

UK Singer-songwriter Emily MaguireAcclaimed singer-songwriter Emily Maguire is performing at Artrix Arts Centre on Saturday 28th September 2013.

Best-known for her strong, thought-provoking lyrics and ‘supremely expressive vocals’ (Rock’n’Reel Magazine), Emily’s songs have been played regularly on Radio 2 and have won her fans across the globe.

Classically trained on cello, piano and flute, Emily taught herself the guitar and started writing songs when she found herself stuck at home with a chronic illness.  A few years later, back on her feet and fed up with grey skies and concrete, she decided to give up her flat in London for a shack made from recycled wood, tin and potato sacks on a farm out in the Australian bush.  There she set up her own record label Shaktu Records with partner Christian Dunham, and for four years lived an eco-friendly, self-sufficient lifestyle, financing her music by making and selling goats cheese on the farm.

Following the release of her critically acclaimed albums ‘Stranger Place’ and ‘Keep Walking’, Emily returned to the UK touring extensively with some of the world’s great singer-songwriters including Don McLean, Eric Bibb, Paul Brady and Roddy Frame.  The title track of ‘Keep Walking’ was playlisted on Radio 2 in the UK and on ABC Radio across Australia.  Emily’s third album ‘Believer’, a ‘masterpiece’ according to Maverick Magazine, won rave reviews in the music press with 2 songs playlisted on Radio 2.

After 7 months on the road in 2011 with the former lead singer of Dr Hook, Dennis Locorriere, Emily took time out from touring in 2012 to write and record her fourth studio album ‘Bird Inside A Cage’.  The album was produced by Nigel Butler (k.d. lang, Will Young, Robbie Williams) known to TV lovers as one of the producers on X Factor.  With its release funded entirely by Emily’s fans, ‘Bird Inside A Cage’ is a bold departure from her previous recordings while still retaining all the underlying trademarks of her emotive, lyric-rich songs.  The album was released in July 2013.

Emily will be performing at Artrix Arts Centre, Slideslow Drive, Bromsgrove on Saturday 28th September 2013.  Tickets are £10, available from the Box Office on 01527 577330 or online at http://www.artrix.co.uk.

Rooted By Sasha Lewis Is Roots Rock Worth Shouting About!

CD Review
Title: Rooted
Artist: Sasha Lewis
Label: Independent
Released: 2010
Stars: 4.0

It has been a while since a female singer-songwriter in the roots rock genre has wowed me with her debut album, but Salmon Arm, British Columbia’s dynamite Sasha Lewis has done just that with her stunning 10 track CD, Rooted.

Sasha doesn’t immediately remind me of any other artist, although if you’re a fan of Melissa Etheridge or Feist you will probably love her sound. Her passionate vocal performances, skillful strumming, bleached blond, tattooed, punk goddess/alternating brunette earth mother vibe is one I haven’t seen in an acoustic artist who writes groovy and powerful folk/rock songs. This makes Sasha stand out in a crowd and her music stands out too. Her tenacious vocals and poignant lyrics that reflect the ways we deal with love gone wrong, the exorcism of our demons and the search for a better life, blend perfectly to create a memorable listening experience that becomes more profound with each spin of the disc.

Sasha’s eclectic influences range from Ani Difranco, Jimi Hendrix and Joan Jett to Bruce Cockburn, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Johnny Horton, Alison Krauss, Hank Williams and Ryan Bingham. She wrote all of the songs on Rooted and was accompanied by Jesse Clarke on guitar, percussion & back-up vocals, Jake Verburg on guitar (on Still Photograph), Darrin Herting on bass & cello, Roxy Roth on piano, Leon Power on drums and Stephanie Webster on back-up vocals.

Rooted opens with the slow-burning, evocative rocker Shot You Down, followed by another mid-tempo, melodious rocker, Your Safe Hands. Sasha’s voice morphs from clear-voiced and plaintive balladeer in Roots, Still Photograph, Until Your Home and Monsters (a lullaby about monsters under the stairs) to a feisty, banshee-like wail that stirs the loins in Your Safe Hands, Supergirl, and Following One (my favourite tracks on the album):

FOLLOWING ONE

you’re fragile and young, think you got everything under your thumb,
mercy child you don’t know anything but the mess that you bring,
and the pain from your past, oh the pain from your past

heavily guarded but easily influenced,
you become the poster child to this fake facade
of the next best thing that society brings, society brings

no no no, no no, no no no, no no
I won’t go the way you tell me
no no no, no no, no no no, no no
I’ll tread these waters till I reach land
no no no, no no, no no no, no no, no no no, no no

harnessed my tone,
guided by my gut,
humbled by the packs

following one like the propaganda on your tongue
mercy child you don’t know anything but the mess that you bring,
and the ghost from your past, the ghosts the ghost from your past

Rooted concludes with the reggae-laced Reasons, leaving you wanting more.

After a successful showcase at the Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival this summer as well as support from CBC Radio, it’s highly likely that Sasha Lewis is a name you’ll be hearing a lot more of in the future.

Former Spy Ann Vriend Is A Sizzling Chanteuse!

Ann Vriend is a former spy. She had been working incognito for an undisclosed European agency, posing as a freelance journalist, when she met someone who was also a spy but for the other side. Against all odds, they fell in love and thus entered an increasingly complicated game of torn loyalties, dangerous, clandestine passion, and treacherous lies.

It is these experiences which inspired When We Were Spies; the exquisite baroque pop album by former agent Ann Vriend, an impressive collection of 11 moving, catchy pop songs; a richly layered, edgy yet tender declaration of bravery and love in a time of confusion and fear, produced by Juno nominated producer Douglas Romanow.

Before the album was pressed it had pre-sold 800 copies and garnered 4 star national reviews, including in NOW Magazine, A n E Magazine, and others.

Hovering perfectly between the accessibility of mainstream “pop” and a fresh, quirky writing and singing style all her own, ex-spy Vriend has crossed genres such as pop, rock, roots, electronica, cabaret, soul, and even tinges of alt country– all with humor and flare. This continues to allow her commercial radio hits while seamlessly fitting into the solo soft-seat theatre and festival circuit, celebrated by both Indie music fans and accomplished fellow musicians as much as listeners of mainstream radio. Her blend of originality with pop sounds is comparable to innovators such as Kate Bush, Regina Spector, Sarah Slean, and Feist. Her literary, poetic lyrics have likened her to Leonard Cohen and Paul Simon, and her honest voice shows hints of Dolly Parton’s clear, direct heartbreak, and Aretha Franklin’s stunning, exquisite soul.

With years of international performances under her belt Vriend has wowed audiences around the world with her well-known command as a solo performer, while with her accomplished, world class band unleashes a fuller sound with fervent passion.

Ann’s eclectic fan base is testimony to the fact on record and on stage, her talent lies in her ability to encompass the feelings of true music lovers of any sort. Fans from all walks of life agree, “This is one well-kept secret everyone should have access to.” — Pop Matters, March 2008
