New York City Indie Rock Duo Supersmall Release New LP, Silent Moon, and It’s Brilliant

Silent Moon by Supersmall

A week ago, on St. Patrick’s Day, I happened to randomly click on the link of a tweet by @colindempsey and listened to his storytelling/stand-up comedy performance on YouTube. The first thing I noticed was his Irish accent which always makes me perk up, and the second was that he was genuinely funny. So I tweeted to him to tell him how much I enjoyed the video and we started chatting and he told me that he’s a singer-songwriter and one-half of the New York City based indie rock duo, Supersmall. As I’m a big fan of Irish musicians, I immediately went to their Bandcamp profile and listened to a couple of tracks from their latest album, Silent Moon. I was not only immediately captivated, but I love their sound so much that I purchased the album. I haven’t been this delighted by a new music discovery since I met Melbourne based, Irish singer-songwriter Andy White five years ago. For those of you who know me, you know what that means. True love for an artist of whom I will forever be a fan, and the same goes for Colin Dempsey and Supersmall. So, please read further and better yet, listen to Supersmall on Bandcamp or their website (links below) and see if you don’t feel the same way.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(New York, NY) New York City-based, indie rock duo, Supersmall, announce their new LP, Silent Moon.  The LP was produced, recorded and mixed by Tom Beaujour at Nuthouse Recording, who’s worked with Roadrunner Records, Prosthetic Records and Barsuk Records.

A little older, a little bit more experimental, the album takes you through a daydream-like stretch of jazzy melodies, retro-rock and songs sung out to sea. A truly original sound inspired by artists such as Neil Finn and Pink Floyd, there is a sophisticated balance of poetic lyrics that span religion to untraditional love songs, honest vocals and intricate guitar—all amidst an ethereal atmosphere of keyboards, strings and trumpet.

Supersmall is composed of singer-songwriter, Colin Dempsey, and drummer, Daniela Schiller. Supersmall drummer Daniela Schiller and guitarist / lead vocalist Colin DempseyDempsey is an Irish writer and storyteller based in New York. He has performed his unique blend of indie-rock music in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and most recently, the US. Schiller is a musician, storyteller and Neuroscientist, who leads the Schiller Lab of Affective Neuroscience at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. In 2013, the duo released their debut EP, This Other World. The Indie Blender says, “Dempsey’s and Schiller’s experience as musicians is evident in this pristinely produced collection of dreamy folk songs.”

Indie-Music.com says the two “make a compelling duo; a very organic and natural partnership of storytellers whose lyrical content shine among these seven well-crafted songs.” They also featured This Other World on their 13 Editor Picks of 2013 list. Silent Moon is the band’s sophomore project, released February 2016.

Colin and Daniela met on the New York storytelling scene – both are also writers and big fans of good whiskey. Most importantly, they are close friends and all of this shines through on the record.

The next time you’re in New York, look them up and try to catch a live show, they’ll have whiskey.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Canada’s Finest Recording Artists: Amanda Martinez, Sultans of String and Fearing & White

Amanda Martinez Valentine Concert - Kingston Road Concert SeriesI have to be honest. As a chronically single, 50-something, die-hard romantic female who feels that the Ship of Love sailed without me, Valentine’s Day is not my favourite holiday and most of the time I do my best to ignore it as I never have plans to celebrate. I’d be at home watching Netflix like most other evenings. However, this year, I’m trying hard to think positively and working as a social media manager for musicians does have its perks. I’m a huge fan of all of the artists that I mention in this post, not just because I’ve worked with them, but because, quite simply put, they are among Canada’s finest recording artists.

If you live in the Toronto area and are looking for something special to do with your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day Eve: Friday, February 13th (you’re not superstitious, are you?), I highly recommend going to see the extraordinary Amanda Martinez at Kingston Road United Church in the Beaches.

Amanda’s voice is an elixir for the soul! She is a Toronto-based singer songwriter whose music blends her unique Mexican and South African roots with flamenco soul. Her solo CDs have garnered her multiple nominations for Latin Jazz Performer of the Year, and her songs have appeared on three Putumayo world music collections, including Latin Dreamland and Cafe Latino. Martinez has headlined concerts at the 2011 PanAmerican Games in Guadalajara and the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Her newest CD Mañana was helmed by Grammy-winning producer Javier Limón (Buika, Mariza) who hails Martinez as “one of the greatest voices in the world.”

Amanda performs for the Kingston Road Village Concert Series at Kingston Road United Church on Friday, February 13, 2015 at 8:00 pm. Get your tickets now here.

What do we really know about the origins of Valentine’s Day? We know that Saint Valentine was a third century Roman martyr, but he had nothing to do with the romantic traditions that became associated with his holiday. In this century, we celebrate February 14th by sending cards or “Valentines”, flowers and chocolates to our loved ones; by going out for dinner to our favourite restaurants; or even by creating the perfect CD mix to let our beloved know just how much we care.

Award-winning world music super group Sultans of String recently released their official video for the Chris McKhool penned “Will You Marry Me”, theChris McKhool of Sultans of String proposal song he wrote for his lovely wife who appears in the video with their beautiful young daughter. The video has now surpassed 80,000 views! Valentine’s Day is not only one of the most romantic days of the year for many, but also one of the most popular for popping the question. “Will You Marry Me” from the 2015 Juno Award-nominated album, Symphony! (Instrumental Album of the Year) is the perfect proposal song. Unabashedly adoring, this is certainly one of Sultans of String’s finest moments and the perfect addition to your Valentine’s Day Mix CD!

So, what am I, the Hallmark Holiday Cynic, doing THIS YEAR to celebrate Valentine’s Day? I confess that I did not make a mix CD. However, I am going with my sister to see that brilliant, Irish-born, singer-songwriting duo knownFearing & White Tea and Confidences as Fearing & White perform songs from their sophomore album Tea and Confidences at Abbott Hall in Tamworth. The Napanee Guide featured multiple Juno Award winning Blackie and the Rodeo Kings member Stephen Fearing and fully paid up 21st Century Troubadour (and author) Andy White in this recent article. There are only a few tickets left for this show so if you’re interested, call 613-379-2808. You won’t be able to miss me there…I’ll be the chubby red-headed woman with the ear-to-ear grin on her face sitting with a chubby blonde who’ll undoubtedly be tired but happy to be there.

Thank you Stephen & Andy for giving this woman a reason to cast off her usual cynicism and believe in the power of love and gratitude.

Ireland’s Andy White at The Rankin Gallery on Friday, September 14th!

I’d like to share this note from Al Rankin as I’m always really excited about seeing another Andy White show because he’s one of my all-time favourite singer-songwriters and a great guy too!

Hi friends, neighbours and music lovers:

Holy smoke!  Another great one at the Rankin Gallery.  He has won most of Ireland’s songwriting awards, worked with Van Morrison and Peter Gabriel and has Sinead O’Connor singing on his records.  He’s Belfast born Andy White, and he’s in the midst of a world tour that will bring him to Inverary!

Andy White, one of the great Irish singer-songwriters, tours the world with his 12 string guitar in one hand and a book of poetry in the other.  Since his breakthrough single Religious Persuasion, Belfast-born Andy has produced ten internationally released studio albums plus a host of compilations and live recordings and has won several of Ireland’s top songwriting awards.

He has merged pop sensibility with lyrical excellence, social commentary and acoustic guitars ever since his first album Rave On Andy White (1986) burst onto the scene.  Melody Maker reviewed his first album with the headline ‘Yer Man’s Brilliant!’ and Folk Roots made him a cover star.

Since then, Andy has worked with Peter Gabriel as well as some of the great names of Irish music including Van Morrison and Mary Black.  Sinead O’Connor and The Frames have guested on his recordings and Andy was included in the Irish HQ Rock Hall of Fame in 1998.

Socially aware in a way which comes naturally to someone who grew up in Belfast during the 70s and 80s, Andy’s work has always reflected his time and place.  Making this particular experience universal, his writing incorporates and transcends the boundaries of his native land.

Last year a long term friendship and writing collaboration with top flight Canadian singer songwriter Stephen Fearing produced the album ‘Fearing & White (2011).

The world of Andy White is peripatetic, intuitive, and never uneventful.  In November 2009 Lagan Press published 21st Century Troubadour, Andy’s on-the-road journal, and in 2012 an ‘album of the book’ is set for release, a two CD set featuring a compilation of songs playing throughout the pages of the book, and a series of readings from the book set to music.
