However, I\u2019ve struggled to explain why. <strong>What makes Irish writers so special?<\/strong> Ireland is a small country, and yet it has produced an astonishing number of world-class writers, poets, playwrights, and songwriters. The sheer concentration of literary talent is so remarkable that scholars have been trying to explain it for generations. While there is no single answer, the reasons are deeply rooted in Ireland\u2019s history, language, landscape, music, and culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many ways, Ireland doesn\u2019t just produce writers\u2014it produces storytellers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ireland.ie\/en\/irish-literature\/ireland-island-of-writers-whats-behind-irelands-literary-spark\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.ireland.ie\/en\/irish-literature\/ireland-island-of-writers-whats-behind-irelands-literary-spark\/\">Storytelling is woven into the country\u2019s identity<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Nation Built on Stories<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Long before books became common, Ireland had an oral tradition stretching back more than 2,000 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ancient <strong>seancha\u00ed<\/strong> (\u201cshan-a-key\u201d) were professional storytellers who travelled from village to village preserving:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">myths<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">history<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">genealogy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">folklore<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">local legends<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stories weren\u2019t merely entertainment. They were how people remembered who they were. Even after literacy spread, this oral tradition never disappeared. It simply evolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you listen to an Irish conversation today, you\u2019ll often hear echoes of this tradition in vivid anecdotes, humour wrapped around serious subjects, exaggerated by affectionate storytelling, and careful attention to rhythm and timing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The language itself encourages narrative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Influence of the Irish Language<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although English became dominant after British rule, the Irish language (Gaeilge) profoundly shaped Irish English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Irish speech often contains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">lyrical phrasing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">musical cadence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">metaphorical thinking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">indirect expression<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">poetic understatement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many linguists believe this helps explain why Irish prose often sounds almost musical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of saying: \u201cIt was raining,\u201d an Irish storyteller might say: \u201cThe rain came sideways all afternoon as though it had a score to settle.\u201d That instinct toward imagery runs deep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Music and Language Are Inseparable<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traditional Irish music is built around storytelling. Many songs aren\u2019t simply songs. They\u2019re miniature novels. They tell stories about lost love, exile, rebellion, family, grief, hope, and ordinary people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even instrumental music often follows a narrative emotional arc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Growing up surrounded by songs that tell stories naturally shapes writers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Songwriters: Poets with Guitars<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of Ireland\u2019s greatest songwriters write more like poets than pop musicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their lyrics often emphasize imagery, symbolism, and emotional nuance over straightforward storytelling. You can hear echoes of older Irish poetic traditions in contemporary songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ever since I was a teenager, I have loved Irish musicians. It started with Bob Geldof and The Boomtown Rats, U2, and Van Morrison. I listened to everything they recorded, and their voices spoke to my soul. They still do. Later, I became a fan of Sinead O\u2019Connor, The Waterboys, Hothouse Flowers, Damien Rice, The Frames, Jack Lukeman, Snow Patrol, Imelda May, The Pogues, The Cranberries, The Thrills, The Devlins, Hozier, and the list goes on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I immersed myself in popular Irish music for many years, and it was the catalyst for my deciding to sell everything I own and move to Ireland in 1998. Unfortunately, that move didn\u2019t work out for me, but the experiences I had in Ireland over three trips changed me in profound ways. And throughout everything, the soundtrack of Irish musicians fuelled the fire of my devotion to absorbing as much Irish literature as I could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grieving The Genius of Glen Hansard<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week, like so many others in the world, I grieve the untimely, tragic death of one of the most special human beings the music world has ever known. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/music\/2026\/07\/29\/glen-hansard-dies-in-dublin-motorbike-crash\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/music\/2026\/07\/29\/glen-hansard-dies-in-dublin-motorbike-crash\/\">Glen Hansard<\/a>. Glen was all about humanity, compassion, generosity of spirit, and of course, music. There was no one else quite like him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What made Glen extraordinary is something deeper: he wrote songs that feel <em>lived<\/em> rather than <em>written<\/em>. He wrote with emotional honesty and often revealed uncomfortable truths about love, regret, hope, forgiveness, and self-doubt. One of Hansard\u2019s greatest gifts wasn\u2019t the words; it was what he left unsaid. His songs sound like conversations, and his melodies serve the emotion. His voice is part of the writing, and its imperfections are what make it so beautiful. And above all, he believed in hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was fortunate enough to see The Frames in concert once, and I\u2019m deeply saddened that I didn\u2019t get to see one of his solo shows. However, I will carry love and appreciation for him in my heart always. <em>The Commitments<\/em> and <em>Once<\/em> are two of my favourite films, and I\u2019m grateful to be able to watch them any time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Centuries of Hardship Created Observers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ireland endured famine, colonization, religious conflict, poverty, emigration, and political upheaval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People learned to observe human nature because survival often depended on understanding power, family, and community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Great writing frequently grows from tension. Ireland had plenty. Yet despite hardship, Irish literature rarely loses its humour. That combination of sorrow and laughter may be one of its defining characteristics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Poetry Is Almost Everyday Conversation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many countries, poetry belongs in universities. In Ireland, it belongs in pubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People casually quote poetry. Children learn poems early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Writers are admired. Literature isn\u2019t viewed as something elite. It\u2019s considered part of national identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Education Places Unusual Value on Literature<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Irish schools traditionally emphasize poetry, literature, public speaking, essays, and drama. Irish universities are not fully tuition\u2011free, but most Irish undergraduates do not pay tuition thanks to government funding, making learning more accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students encounter writers like Yeats, Heaney, Joyce, and Beckett. These aren\u2019t distant historical figures. They\u2019re cultural heroes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ireland Values Words<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many cultures admire wealth. Ireland has traditionally admired wit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being clever with language carries enormous social value. Someone who tells a wonderful story earns respect. A person with a sharp tongue is admired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conversation itself becomes an art form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Pub as a Literary Workshop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Irish pubs historically served as debating societies, music venues, storytelling circles, political forums, and comedy clubs. Writers listened more than they talked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every evening became research. And the research often turned into a <em>seisi\u00fan<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dialogue heard in pubs often finds its way into novels decades later. Roddy Doyle is brilliant at writing such novels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Landscape Itself Feels Mythic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ireland\u2019s landscapes almost demand stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mist-covered hills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ancient ruins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stone circles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Celtic crosses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boglands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Atlantic Ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even ordinary places often carry legends stretching back centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nature feels alive with memory, so many Irish writers describe landscapes almost as characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mythology Never Disappeared<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike some cultures where mythology became museum history, Irish mythology remains part of everyday awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stories of the Tuatha D\u00e9 Danann, C\u00fa Chulainn, Fionn mac Cumhaill, banshees, selkies, fairies, and the Otherworld continue influencing modern novels, songs, and films.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The supernatural comfortably coexists with ordinary life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Irish Humour Embraces Contradiction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Irish writing often balances:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">tragedy and comedy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">realism and fantasy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">beauty and darkness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than choosing one emotion, Irish writers frequently allow both to exist simultaneously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That emotional complexity makes their work feel deeply human.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An Extraordinary Literary Legacy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ireland has produced an astonishing number of internationally celebrated writers relative to its size, including Nobel Prize winners and authors whose works reshaped literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My favourite Irish writers include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Oscar Wilde<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">W.B. Yeats<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Brendan Behan<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Seamus Heaney<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Roddy Doyle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Colum McCann<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Colm T\u00f3ib\u00edn<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Neil Jordan<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Patrick McCabe<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Frank McCourt<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Frank Delaney<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Edna O\u2019Brien<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Maggie O\u2019Farrell<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Emma Donoghue<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And I have read many more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The impact of these writers extends far beyond Ireland, influencing literature, theatre, and culture around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is There Something Uniquely \u201cIrish\u201d About the Writing?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the most distinctive quality is not simply eloquence but <em>attention<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Irish writers tend to notice everything:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">the rhythm of speech<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">subtle shifts in emotion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">awkward silences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">weather<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">memory<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">landscape<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">the peculiarities of ordinary people<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They often write with great compassion for flawed characters, finding significance in everyday moments rather than only in dramatic events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many readers feel that Irish writing carries a quiet intimacy, as if someone has pulled up a chair by the fire and begun telling a story meant just for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the Irish novelist John McGahern once suggested through both his work and his reflections on writing, the ordinary lives of people are worthy of profound attention. That perspective\u2014combined with Ireland\u2019s oral traditions, musical heritage, history, and reverence for language\u2014helps explain why this small island has had such an outsized influence on the literary world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Parting Glass<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As I grow older, I find myself returning to Irish writers, musicians, and storytellers more than ever. They remind me that beauty doesn\u2019t have to shout to be heard. It can live in ordinary conversations, quiet acts of kindness, bittersweet memories, and songs that somehow understand us better than we understand ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, what makes Irish writers so special? They don\u2019t simply tell stories; they honour what it means to be human. They find grace in flawed people, poetry in everyday moments, and hope even when life feels impossibly heavy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/glenhansard.com\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/glenhansard.com\/\">Glen Hansard<\/a> embodied all those qualities. Through his music, his generosity of spirit, and his unwavering honesty, he reminded us that art isn\u2019t about perfection. It\u2019s about connection. It\u2019s about telling the truth with enough courage that someone else feels a little less alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His voice may have fallen silent, but the stories he gave us\u2014and the kindness with which he gave them\u2014will continue to echo for generations.
